Description
Rare circa 1900 "Harwood" trademark JW Jenkins' Sons of Kansas City semi-fancy Model 45 (?) bowl-back Mandolin == Check out the fascinating history of Harwood by Gregg Miner online in "Harwood Harp Guitars" == This beauty has the details of an early (1895-1908) Jenkins built instrument -- and as Mr. Miner pointed out, the "plain but....fancy" style of some Harwood mandolins == Harwood New York on peghead back along with serial number 140xx, and triangle Harwood trademark inside on neck heel == Solid Spruce top, bound with herringbone and ivoroid, double herringbone and ivoroid soundhole rosette -- "Harwood" engraved ivoroid plate in upper fretboard -- inlaid celluloid pickguard -- fancy peghead cutout with rosewood overlay -- 21 alternating mahogany and maple ribs, with Brazilian rosewood rim decorated with diagonal extension of ivoroid top binding -- original 1886 patent tailpiece -- original enclosed tuning pegs with intact celluloid buttons == VG or better condition, original metal parts in very nice shape, all the celluloid/ivoroid parts in remarkable condition -- Play wear/scratches/small dings -- no cracks in top -- one crack in back rib (last picture) and a rib seam looks possibly re-glued -- peghead cutout has some dings/chips to center pediment -- Straight neck with good action, some fret wear mainly first 3 frets, not bad == Includes a modern Eastman 4-latch hard case that fits well -- case has some exterior wear, clean inside with good hardware == I found a 1895 Jenkins catalog scan -- this looks like a model 45 except it has maple ribs instead of rosewood, and has herringbone -- I'd call it a series 40 or 50 model (mid-range models at the time)Worldwide Shipping -- NOTE:
International buyers NOTE: CITES as of 1 Jan. 2017 restricts all rosewoods (although most are not endangered!!) -- our guitars may have rosewood components; check with your local customs to determine if this affects shipping to your country before purchase
